The mandatory data retention legislation comes into effect on 13th October. There’s one positive aspect to that, which is that the number of agencies able to access data will shrink dramatically, from the current hundreds across all levels of government, to a defined list of less than 20.
Meanwhile, the implementation plans for Internet-related data are in disarray. The Attorney-General’s Department is still struggling to define exactly what they want ISPs to collect and we understand that the majority of ISPs have applied for an extension for lodging their implementation plans.
Things are really starting to bite, and there is, as predicted, a genuine threat emerging from this implementation process to the very existence of smaller ISPs. The government is also yet to confirm how much funding they’re prepared to commit to the implementation process.
At this point, one thing is certain: the cost of internet access in this country will increase as a result.
We need to keep the pressure up, particularly as we’re now less than 12 months away from the next federal election, to have this legislation reviewed and the worst aspects rolled-back.
HELP US HIRE A COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
To keep that pressure up and to ensure maximum exposure for this campaign, we need to hire a Communications Intern.
We believe unpaid internships are a false economy and we’re hoping to get an upcoming communications star, so we propose to pay them a modest wage.

MAKE A DONATION
…and get a t-shirt (and stickers!)
Campaigns unfortunately cost money. While we are very careful to keep our costs as low as possible, we need funding to make this campaign a success.
Your donation will help us with travel costs, to enable us to meet with MPs and Senators and to appear before parliamentary committees; with design and development costs, so that we can expand the functionality of this site; with media engagement and social media management; and with other ancilliary costs, such as website hosting charges.
All donations of $60.00 will receive one of these great campaign t-shirts as well as some campaign stickers to help you show your support for the campaign.
Interested in being actively involved with the campaign in any way? Please email us at: weare[AT]citizensnotsuspects.org.au including a brief summary of your skills and interests (and which city/area you’re in).
